Ken Whalen's experience in public affairs includes positions as a legislative chief of staff, state agency legislative liaison, association executive and independent lobbyist.
Ken has been an independent lobbyist since 2013. He began working for Texas Daily Newspaper Association as Legislative Director in 2000 and was named Executive Vice President in 2005. In 1998, Ken was named Coordinator of Intergovernmental Affairs for the Texas Commission for the Blind. After working as a reporter for two Texas daily newspapers, he became Chief of Staff in 1987 for State Representative Barry Telford. A native of Schertz, Texas, Ken graduated from Texas State University with a bachelor's degree in journalism.
Ken and his wife Jackie, a Drippings Springs ISD school teacher, live near Dripping Springs in Hays County. They have two sons: Jack, a recent college graduate and Bennett, a University of North Texas student.
Ken’s hobbies include landscaping, travel, hunting, golf, and San Antonio Spurs basketball.
