Gustavo brings high-powered determination, charisma, and unmatched compassion for Texans to the McWilliams team that will make an already promising session even more productive. He grew up in the greater Dallas area before receiving three Bachelor of Science degrees from the University of Texas in Political Communications, Economics, and Public Relations. From placing in speech tournaments to winning the senior graduating public relations campaign, Gustavo's drive to succeed has carried over into Texas politics.
Gustavo is very excited and eager to continue serving in Texas politics. Most recently he had the opportunity to work as legislative aide to Representative Eddie Rodriguez (District 51). Gustavo was responsible for bills within the Public Safety and Economic Development and Workforce Committees. Representative Rodriguez is currently the Vice Chair to the Select Transportation Funding Committee. His roles during the 81st session involved liaison to the representative, attending to Representative Rodriguez's constituents, and contributing to eight of the representative's twenty-four bills put into law. Gustavo’s experience in the Texas House of Representatives solidified his place in Texas politics and earned him valuable friendships and contacts throughout the state.
Since the session Gustavo has been working between social work and local campaigning. Most recently, Gustavo worked with Amy Meachum during her successful campaign in winning the 201st Civil District Court election. The experience he has gained through campaign work is invaluable. From working on a field team, phone banking and organizing debates, the hard work, experience and resources gained from campaigning is something that cannot be learned by any other means.
Beyond elections, Gustavo works with at-risk youths, helping them develop and grow to become young adults with a bright future. As a case manager for the Goodwill Youth Services Program, Gustavo contributed in employing 600 at-risk youths throughout Austin. Many of these young adults were prevented from employment from inexperience or hindered through other circumstances. He also mentored at-risk children with local company 'Friend of a Friend'. The experience was incredibly rewarding and eye-opening to many educational issues faced by families with young children with bright futures.
Gustavo also has an appreciation for the financial world. While being the treasurer for three organizations in college, he worked as a financial consultant briefly after college graduation. There he gained valuable skills by collaborating and developing financial plans and strategies to identify and meet clients' goals and targets. Aside from finances, he enjoys playing lacrosse as well as coaching local middle school teams. He founded the University of Texas at Dallas lacrosse team and has enjoyed supporting the sport in coaching, refereeing, and continuing to play in the Austin men's league.
